Thomas Heatherwick<\/a>\u00a0is to completely overhaul of the Olympia events centre in west\u00a0London<\/a>, creating a hotel, a theatre and suite of new entertainment venues\u00a0within the Victorian exhibition hall.<\/span><\/p>\n

Heatherwick Studio<\/a>\u00a0is working with London-based architectural practice\u00a0SPPARC<\/a>\u00a0on the overhaul the\u00a0Olympia London<\/a>\u00a0venue in Kensington. In addition to the hotel and theatre, the duo are expected to design\u00a0museums,\u00a0co-working<\/a>\u00a0spaces and restaurants for the venue.<\/p>\n

The aim is to transform the 130-year-old exhibition hall into a “world-leading arts, entertainment, exhibition and experiential district”, according to investment companies Yoo Capital and\u00a0Deutsch Finance, who own the venue.<\/p>\n

“My studio’s passion is improving the public experience of cities for everyone,” said Heatherwick, who plans to retain the venue’s Victorian features while improving the public facilities within.<\/p>\n

“During this first phase we are beginning to talk to people, particularly local residents and visitors, to learn more about Olympia London and are looking forward to working on the project.”<\/p>\n

The news follows\u00a0Rohan Silva’s claims that west London is need of serious cultural investment<\/a>. The\u00a0Second Home co-founder said the area has seen a decline of affordable workspaces and cultural venue that are\u00a0driving creative industries east<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Olympia was designed by architect Henry Edward Coe and completed in 1886, originally called the National Agricultural Hall. Its key features are a vast arching roof and a huge domed window supported by ironwork.<\/p>\n

The six-hectare site currently hosts 220 exhibitions and events annually, such as\u00a0London Design Festival<\/a>\u00a0trade fair 100% Design.<\/p>\n

“By working with world respected design firm Heatherwick Studio, we are ensuring that Olympia London is elevated on the world stage as a must-visit exhibition, events and leisure destination,” said\u00a0John Hitchcox, the chair of Yoo Capital.<\/p>\n

“Our Victorian forefathers first conceived Olympia London to be a destination for all people to see, learn and experience major exhibitions, events in culture, music, technology, arts and sports,” added the company’s managing partner Lloyd Lee.<\/p>\n

Heatherwick, whose studio has just\u00a0completed the conversion of a grain silo into an art museum in Cape Town<\/a>, was runner up in the design section of the\u00a0inaugural Dezeen Hot List<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 a guide to the most read about figures in the industry.<\/p>\n

The ongoing controversy over his\u00a0Garden Bridge<\/a>\u00a0project for London \u2013\u00a0now scrapped<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 earned him a prominent position on the list.<\/p>\n

Heatherwick’s plans with Danish architect Bjake Ingels for a\u00a0huge headquarters for Google in London<\/a>, and work on\u00a0Manhattan’s\u00a0Hudson Yards<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0London’s Coal Drops Yard<\/a>\u00a0developments have ensured he has remained in the spotlight this year.<\/p>\n
